One Man’s Voice

by Christian Thomas Golden

I climb up the ladder,
ignoring the warnings posted on each rung.
I slip and catch myself, shaking.
Maybe this wasn’t such a great idea.

I complete my ascension, only to find
yet another warning sign:
“To be Demolished – Evacuate by 7:30 AM”
7:35 and the building’s still standing.
“Climb back down!” shouts a deep voice, demanding.

I ask my God, “What am I doing up here?”

“Ask yourself, since you’re all you hear.”
